Much to my disappointment, the U.S. government has recently
confirmed that the world will not end on December 21, 2012 when the Mayan long-count
calendar runs out.
Below is an NSA Cryptologic Quarterly article on the Mayan
calendar system. According to the scholars who wrote the article, "the
Mayans had a "visual astronomical computer which would have enabled Maya
astronomer-priests to complex astronomical calculations simply and accurately.”
